IronMan UK – The Final Week

This weekend sees the return of Ironman UK to Bolton. Participants begin with a 2.4 mile lake swim in Pennington Flash. A 112 mile, two-loop journey from Pennington Flash and onto the breathtaking Lancashire countryside, including sheep house lane and hunters hill. Finally, a 26.2 mile run from the Macron Stadium into Bolton town centre, where they complete three loops of a circuit before finishing in Le Mans Crescent in the shadow of the Albert Hall. The race has 40 qualifying slots for the 2016 edition of the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona up for grabs.

It has already been a busy week at Summit helping people to prepare for this weekend’s Ironman UK and im sure it will get busier as the week goes on. Here are our tips for the final week.

The final week should be all about the preparation for the weekend (approx. 30% your usual intensity). Don’t go into a panic mode, nothing you do in the last week will improve your fitness but could cause issues. Include some activity in each discipline so that your body will stay sharp going into the race, but make sure you follow up with long rest intervals as well. Most people recommend for a race on Sunday take Friday off completely and rest up.

At Summit Physio, we have seen great advantages in the past few years from a well-timed sports massage the week preceding Ironman UK. We recommend getting to see us 3 days prior to the race for the maximum benefit come Sunday. The main aim of a deep sports massage is to improve blood circulation, eliminating the build-up of lactic acids and preventing accumulated stiffness from training repetitively.

Benefits of Summit’s sports massage:

• Improved circulation and lymph flow
• Relaxation and “Feel good factor”
• Reduced muscle tension and soreness
• Improved flexibility and tissue elasticity
