Commonwealth Games 2022 England Wrestling Team
TEAM ENGLAND WRESTLING TEAM ANNOUNCED
Team England announced its representative wrestlers for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham which gets underway on Thursday the 28th of July running through until Monday the 8th of August.
The fantastic nine are; Charlie Bowling, Chloe Spiteri, George Ramm, Georgina Nethorpe, Harvey Ridings, Kelsey Barnes, Mandhir Kooner, Myroslav Dykun, Sarah Clossick.
SUPPORTING THE TALENT
Here at Summit Physio, our team have been delighted to support the team and their wrestlers in their preparations. We have worked particularly closely with Georgina Nelthorpe from Burnley, Kelsey Barnes from Bolton and Sarah Clossick from Wigan.
Georgina Nelthorpe fell in love with wrestling while living in Canada where she was encouraged by her school teachers.
She moved back to her home nation in 2016 and began grappling at clubs in the north-west, igniting her dream of representing her country.
Nelthorpe won a medal at her first international competition – the Sassari International in 2017 – and repeated this feat at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
KELSEY BARNES
Kelsey Barnes was first drawn to wrestling after watching her brothers excel in the sport. But now the 62kg star is on her own path to stardom.
Following her victory at the Helsinki Open in 2018, the 20-year-old has held her own at the highest level. She finished tenth at the 2022 Senior U23 European Championships.
This followed her eighth position finish at the same event in 2021. This is a trajectory she is hoping to continue in Birmingham.
SARAH CLOSSICK
This is English champion Sarah Clossicks second appearance at a Commonwealth Games when she competes in Birmingham this summer.
Wrestling runs in the Clossick family. Brother Mike Grundy won bronze in Glasgow while Sarah’s dad Dave coached her for over two decades at Wigan and Leigh Wrestling Club.
Clossick made her Commonwealth debut at Glasgow 2014 where she finished fifth at 58kg.
She enjoys a keen rivalry with team-mate Chloe Spiteri. The two have grappled for gold at the last two English Championships. With Clossick taking gold at this year’s edition.
WRESTLING
In a head-to-head face-off, contenders grapple, throw and pin their opponents in a battle of strength, technique and strategy.
The freestyle Wrestling event will take place at Coventry Stadium & Indoor Arena where competitors will compete across a range of different weight categories.
Watch as these powerful athletes go toe-to-toe on the mats in an attempt to dominate the opposition.
AN EXCITING EVENT
Speaking about their excitement about being part of the team, Team England Generation 22 athlete Georgina Nelthorpe said:
“I’m very excited to be back representing Team England at the home Games in Birmingham and I am planning on building on my previous bronze medal.”
Kelsey Barnes added:
“I’m very excited to be attending my first multi-sport Games. I’m looking forward to competing for Team England in Birmingham and having all of my friends and family there to support me too,”
While Mandhir Kooner shared:
“Being from the West Midlands and representing team England is a proud moment for me. I’m excited for the home Games experience!”
