Yoga is growing in popularity, and with studios popping up more often, here is a great opportunity to learn a little more about yoga, and how it can help you to move, and move much better!

This week’s Blog is written by our clinician, Laura Taylor. Laura is based at both our Wrightington and Wigan Clinics. Laura attends Just Yoga with Ali, you can find more info Here.

As a budding yogi in the making, I myself have discovered the amazing physical and mental benefits that can be enjoyed with a weekly yoga class. I attend a restorative yin and yang yoga class once a week, and quite honestly float out the room, feeling relaxed, and peaceful, and the aches in my upper back and neck that have built up during the week have subtly melted away after several long-held yoga poses that work on stretching out the deep aspect of muscles.

At Summit Physiotherapy, one of our main philosophies is educating our patients into moving better. So if we are looking at encouraging our clients to move better, decrease pain which will lead to an increase in function, then I do believe yoga can be a great way to achieve this!

Due to the many benefits of attending a yoga class, or simply adding some yoga poses or stretches to your daily routine, I also like to incorporate appropriate poses and stretches that can decrease pain and improve movement into my practice. I like to recommend it to my clients, or to help teach them some simple poses, with the aim to encourage them to move better, and manage stress better which can help with pain!

Benefits of Yoga

Alongside a quieter mind and the body feeling relaxed, here are some other benefits that you can experience when you attend a yoga class:

  1. Increased flexibility
  2. Increased muscle strength and tone
  3. Improved respiration, energy and vitality
  4. Maintaining a balanced metabolism
  5. Weight reduction
  6. Cardio and circulatory health
  7. Improved athletic performance

All these amazing benefits have one common and great benefit-they will help us to move better!

Types of Yoga

There are many more types of yoga, some more dynamic, and others relaxing and slow like the lass I attend. Here are 8 common types of yoga that the beginner or more advanced yogi can enjoy!

  3. BIKRAM
  4. HATHA

The mental benefits of yoga are just as important as the physical benefits! As a clinician that sees many patients with pain that is related to stress and lack of activity, controlling and managing stress combined with increasing general activity through attending a weekly yoga class may be a great way to decrease your pain, improve your movement health, allowing a better quality of life!
